Introduction
The MiG-29K is modified from the Mikoyan MiG-29M for naval operations.
Decided to do a bit of review of the MiG-29K (Fig.). You many find it useful or interesting.
Initial thoughts
Looking at the stats.
- Expensive (190)
- 4x Short Ranged ASM Missiles (4375m)
- 4x Accurate short ranged AA Missiles (5 HE)
- Small Turn Radius (250)
- Lacks Exceptional air detection (‘Very Good’)
- Good ECM (40%)
- Long T.O.T (150s)
Blufor Ships
Looking at enemy Ship’s AA Range (Fig.), note ships without AA are omitted like Fremantle and Pegasus. The most signification ship threats are; Kongo, La Fayette, Hatsuyuki & Baek-Ku.
Maximising usage
The MiG-29K a few advantages over the other ASM planes IF utilised properly.
- Tight Turn Radius (Fig.)
- 4x ASM Missiles

- AA missiles can attack helicopters

(1) The tight turn radius is incredibly important for the planes survival.
To defeat a ship like a La Fayette it is possibly to launch missiles without receiving AA fire back. If you don’t attack it head on, you need to aim towards it and peel away (Fig.) before getting into AA range. A single Le Fayette, will destroy you if you attack it head on trying to launch all four missiles. When you attack head on you enemy more time & are at a closer distance to the enemy.
(2) I generally don’t like 4x missiles on an ASM plane. I prefer when they launch & EVAC safely. As stated before peeling away you can launch 2-3 missiles on a strike, which is the ‘safe’ option. However there are times when it is appropriate to attack a ship head on and launch all four missiles.
- Ships which can’t retaliate effectively like; Po-Hang, Dong-Hae, Cham-Su-Ri
- A ship which is Stunned / Panicked. Even the mighty Kongo is vulnerable to this (Fig.)
(3) MiG-29K & A-5 are the only two planes that can target helicopter with AA missiles. The MiG-29K is a very capable helicopter hunter, with it’s 60% & 5 HE.
A single strike run included 4 missiles all hitting. Destroying a cobra & two OH-58C/S (Fig.). It can be also assist in Anti-Plane as well, the missiles are good but are short ranged.
Conclusion
The plane is overpriced, and requires more attention than Su-27K & JH-7 in anti-ship duties. When the opportunity presents itself the MiG-29K can devastate enemy ships. Extremely good at picking off helicopters and lone escort ships (Cham-Su-Ri / Po-Hang etc). Su-27K is an essential ASM Plane card for the deck so it won’t replace it. JH-7 is also great choice. If you understand the limitations of MiG-29K and prefer the anti-helo capabilities it could be the 2nd Card of ASM planes.
